Rains of Gurugram: Gurugram, the city once designed to decongest national capital Delhi, deals with its own problem every monsoon: severe waterlogging. Several key regions of the 'cyber city' have been completely choked due to the continuous rain, affecting the regional connectivity. Monsoon 2025 once again exposed the abysmal situation as the deluge left the Millennium city in shambles. The residents of these areas, while sharing the visuals on social media platforms, expressed their frustration with the poor management and slammed the authorities for the negligence. The residents stated that they are in a situation of "house arrest" even after paying hefty rents and spending crores on buying the flats.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) claim that every possible step is being taken to normalise the situation. However, the residents are losing their patience and are wondering where the crores of their tax money are being spent. Several key areas of the city, including Subhash Chowk, Honda Chowk underpasses, Sushant Lok, Vatika Chowk, Extension Road, Kapashera Road, and Palam Vihar, are facing multiple issues due to the waterlogging.

Abhishek Kumar, a resident of Sector 51, Mayfield Garden, while expressing his helplessness, stated that despite paying a hefty rent, he is not able to access the basic facilities due to the waterlogging. He also explained that the situation has not only affected the vehicular movement, but also no home delivery services are willing to deliver products in this area.

"I am a resident of Sector 51, Mayfield Garden, and travel daily to my office in Sector 60. The entire route is completely waterlogged. Despite paying a rent of Rs 28,000 in a so-called metro city, the situation here is worse than in small towns. We are not able to go to the office, no delivery agents are willing to come, and even for basic needs like vegetables and groceries, we cannot step out of our homes because of knee-deep water everywhere," Kumar told The Daily Jagran.

"It is very painful to see that in a city like Gurgaon, residents are suffering so much due to poor drainage and waterlogging. Families are stuck inside their homes, children cannot go to school, and daily life has come to a standstill. We expect better facilities in return for the high cost of living, but the reality is completely opposite," he added.

Apart from this, the residents of the areas near metro stations are also facing issues due to the continuous rain. Neha, a resident of Sushant Lok Phase 1, stated that while booking cab services is already tough in this area, the commuters are not even able to use metro services due to the waterlogging. Several prominent personalities, including businessman Suhel Seth, have also raised the issue and opined that Gurugram residents deserve better for the amount of tax they pay.

Why Gurugram Gets Waterlogged Every Year

Dr Sewa Ram, a professor at the School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi, while explaining the main reasons behind the situation, stated that several roads of Gurugram are old and there is no proper sewage system beside them, leading to severe waterlogging. He further stated that the situation is worse in the areas under transformation, adding that the under-construction roads are easily filled with water.

Professor Sewa Ram emphasised that most areas of Sector 37 are facing the issue, as two of the three lanes of most of the roads are filled with water, leading to severe congestion. However, he further stated that a better sewage system is expected in the newly constructed areas. Apart from the poor management, the location of the city is also one of the possible reasons behind the current situation.

Experts have further highlighted that a significant amount of rainwater flows from the Aravalli hills towards the city in the monsoon season, reported ANI. They stated that the sudden surge in water level jams the sewage system, leading to waterlogging on the roads.

The residents of the city await a resolution as they deal with the waterlogging menace every year. Despite the authorities' and government's promises of action during the monsoon, the situation remains unchanged year after year.
