In an unfortunate incident, eight people drowned in the Banas River in Rajasthan's Tonk district on Tuesday. According to the information, a total of 11 people had fallen into the river. While eight drowned, three were rescued.

Tonk Superintendent of Police Vikas Sangwan said that the condition of the three rescued individuals was stable. Providing additional details, he said, "They were pulled out and rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared eight of them dead."

He said that a group of 11 people aged between 25 to 30 years had entered the river to take a bath but they later went into deep water.

SP Sangwan added that it was not immediately known how they fell into deep water. He added that all the victims were from Jaipur and had come to Tonk for a picnic.

The incident took place at around noon at the Old Bridge on the river. The water near the old bridge is deep. Moreover, there was no warning sign or security system in place. The SDRF team was also called in for the rescue.

CM Bhajan Lal Sharma expresses grief

Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma reacted to the tragic incident and expressed condolences. In a post on X, CM Sharma said, "The news of the death of youth due to drowning in Banas river located in Tonk district is extremely sad and painful."

He added that the dsitrict officials were directed to conduct immediate rescue. He said, "As soon as the information about the incident was received, the district administration officials were instructed to immediately conduct rescue and relief operations."

"I pray to God to give peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved families to bear this immense sorrow," CM Sharma added.
