Normal life was affected in Rajasthan on Monday as continuous heavy rainfall from the past three days led to widespread waterlogging, closure of schools, diversion of trains, and damage in crop production.
As many as ten people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the state since Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heavy rainfall is likely to continue in some parts of the state including Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Jalore on September 19, while some parts may witness a drop in rainfall.
Meanwhile, The Jaipur Meteorological Department on Monday issued orange and yellow alerts, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in 16 districts across the state including Pali, Jodhpur, Jalore, Sirohi, Udaipur, Rajsamand, Dungarpur, Banswara, Chittorgarh, Pratapgarh, Ajmer, and Dausa in the next 24 hours.
The weather department also said that nearly seven districts recorded over 100mm of rain in the last 24 hours, with Dungarpur's Nithwa receiving the most, 205mm of extremely heavy rainfall.
The most deaths were reported from Banswara district in Rajasthan where the release of water from the Mahi dam has caused a flood-like situation.
Banswara District Collector Prakash Chandra Sharma said two persons identified as 60-=year-old Swaroopi and 68-year-old Santu Tabiyar died when their huts collapsed. The official also said that several people were swept away in flooded drains, as reported by news agency PTI.
According to an IMD official, the low-pressure area over southeastern Rajasthan has weakened into a circulation system on Monday and is now located over southern Rajasthan.
“Due to the effect of this system, there is a possibility of heavy rain at isolated places in Udaipur, Sirohi, Jalore and Pali districts and heavy rain at isolated places in Dungarpur, Rajsamand, Barmer and Jodhpur districts,” the official said.
“There is a strong possibility of getting relief from heavy rains in the state from September 20,” he further said. Meanwhile, a red alert has been issued in five districts of Gujarat due to heavy rainfall.
