After a big jolt of biting the dust in the Himachal Pradesh Rajya Sabha election, the Congress party on Tuesday appointed  Bhupinder Hooda and DK Shivakumar as observers for the state, where political crisis looms over Sukhu’s government. This came after the grand old party lost the lone Rajya Sabha seat in the hill state despite having over 40 lawmakers in the assembly of 68 seats.

Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi managed to amass only 34 votes as over six MLAs cross-voted in favour of Harsh Mahajan, who was fielded by the BJP. Both the candidates ended up in a tie with 34 votes each and Mahajan clinched the high-stakes Rajya Sabha seat of Himachal Pradesh through a draw.

Ahead of the polling, Harsh Mahajan claimed Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s government will fall if the upper house seat goes to the saffron party as a no-confidence motion was perhaps in the offing. Now, when the worst of the fears of the grand old party has come true, the top brass has sent Bhupinder Hooda and DK Shivakumar to handle the situation in Himachal Pradesh and ensure the government is safe.

Former Haryana chief minister Hooda and Karnataka deputy chief minister Shivakumar would reach Shimla on Wednesday morning to review the situation as the Congress government in the state faces a hard situation, news agency ANI reported citing the sources.

On Tuesday, both Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Harsh Mahajan and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi received 34 votes each, the winner was decided through a draw of lots.

"This is not my victory but that of my party. This is the result of the failure of the Sukhu government. If the graph of the government falls so soon, it is unfortunate. Cross-voting was done because MLAs were verbal about being unhappy with the government. I think this is the victory of the common man and that of my party," Harsh Mahajan told ANI on Tuesday.

He further asserted that the state government is in the minority right now, adding that the people in the state are unhappy with the government.
