Notably, Shri Gorakshpeeth has been continuously associated with the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi case. During the British rule, Chief Minister Yogi's grandfather Mahant Digvijaynath, voiced the issue of the Shri Ram temple. After his death, Mahant Avedyanath made Gurudev's resolve his own, after which, the decisive struggle for the construction of the Shri Ram Temple movement was initiated.
In 1984, when the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagya Committee was formed at Valmiki Bhawan in Ayodhya, the then Gorakshpeethadhishwar Mahant Avedyanathwas unanimously elected as the president. Since then, Mahant Shri Avedyanath Ji Maharaj remained the president of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagya Samiti throughout his life.
