Lucknow | Jagran News Desk: Ranjit Yadav, the President of the Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha, was shot dead by some unknown assailant on Saturday morning. According to media reports, Singh had gone for a walk when he was attacked by some attackers near the CDRI building at Hazratganj area in Lucknow. The assailants also tried to snatch Ranjeet's gold chain and cell phone during the attack.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Lucknow police will investigate the matter, said a media report, adding that the police has formed six teams for investigation.
The Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha President was shot in the head multiple times. The incident has caused tension in the area. His brother, who was with him at the time of the incident, also received bullet injuries and has been admitted to the Trauma Centre of the King George's Medical University (KGMU).
"The body has been identified as of Ranjeet Yadav, who had gone out on morning walk when some unknown assailant shot him. A police team has been formed and further investigation is being carried out," DCP Central Lucknow Dinesh Singh, quoted by Indian Today, said.
The police has said that all exit and entry points in the state capital have been sealed and teams have been set up to identify and arrest the accused. CCTV footage in the area is also being scanned. This is the first major crime in the state capital after the police commissionerate system was implemented in Lucknow on January 14.
Ranjeet Yadav had formed the Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha. Earlier, he was a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP).
The incident comes months after the brutal murder of Kamlesh Tiwari who was shot dead at his residence in Lucknow on October 18, 2019.
The 45-year-old was killed at his home in Lucknow. The police later said that the suspects were "radicalised" and appeared to have targeted him for his inflammatory remarks made in 2015.
"Kamlesh Tiwari murder case has been cracked. The truth of this incident has almost come out before the country," Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya had said earlier.
