Kannada actress and stepdaughter of Karnataka DGP, Ranya Rao, was arrested on Monday at Bengaluru airport for smuggling over 14 kg of gold from Dubai. Rao had allegedly concealed gold bars in her belt, which she frequently kept hidden from public view.

Suspicion grew among authorities after Rao travelled to Dubai four times in 15 days. She made over 10 foreign trips this year and would bring gold every time upon return.

Rao’s father, K Ramachandra Rao, who is currently serving as Karnataka DGP(Police Housing Corporation), clarified he was never aware of her daughter’s deeds. He said the law will do its job and there was ‘no black mark’ on his career.

However, as per his past service record, he is not new to controversies. During his tenure as the IGP of the Southern Range, KR Rao’s name allegedly surfaced in a case involving a huge cash seizure dating back to 2014.

In 2014, police claimed to have seized Rs 20 lakh from a bus, which was stopped by them near Yelwal in Mysuru. Merchants from Kerala, who were transporting the money, claimed that the actual amount seized by the police was Rs 2.27 crore. They further accused the police of diverting a large portion of the funds in collusion with a local businessman.
