Jalebi Baba, also known as Amarpuri, who was convicted of multiple rape charges, died while serving a prison sentence in Haryana's Hisar on Tuesday night. The 49-year-old man was once a jalebi vendor who later became a self-proclaimed spiritual guru. Amarpuri reportedly died due to a heart attack at Central Jail-2 in Hisar. Police said he was unwell lately and was receiving medical treatment from Agroha Medical College during his imprisonment.

Amarpuri experienced chest pains on Tuesday afternoon and was transferred to Hisar District Civil Hospital, then to Agroha Medical College. He later returned to jail after his condition stabilised. However, he suffered further chest pains at night and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Amarpuri, who originally hailed from Punjab’s Mansa, was accused of drugging and raping about 100 women at his ashram in Tohana city of Fatehabad district. After the accusations, a subsequent investigation was launched which uncovered a significant amount of incriminating material at the site.

The controversy surrounding Amarpuri began in October 2017 when explicit videos involving female devotees emerged from his ashram, leading to widespread public outrage. Following a five-year legal battle, the Fatehabad District Court sentenced Amarpuri to 14 years in prison on January 10, 2023. In addition to the 14-year sentence for raping a minor, he received seven years for assaulting several other women and five years under the IT Act.
