Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that he got assurances from the highest level that the Union Territory status of J&K is a “temporary phase”. This comes days after he meets with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital.
"If anybody thinks that somehow the fact that we are a UT will shield you from the consequences of practices that go against the pledge, please remember the shield may last temporarily, but it is only temporary," Abdullah was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Abdullah addressed concerns regarding the governance structure in Jammu and Kashmir, as highlighted by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. He also mentioned that government employees have been operating under a "hybrid system of governance," suggesting that some may attempt to exploit this situation for personal gain.
He reassured the public that this period of uncertainty is only temporary, emphasizing the need for a more stable and effective governance framework. He also said that once statehood is restored, there would not be loopholes to be exploited.
"I have received assurance at the highest level that their commitments made to Jammu and Kashmir, particularly about the governance, will change," he further added.
Earlier on October 16, the union territory’s cabinet passed a resolution seeking statehood. Abdullah recently held discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Minister of Roads, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in New Delhi.
The BJP-led Centre revoked the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. It also carved two union territories from the erstwhile state – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
