JioSpaceFiber:  Reliance Jio on Friday successfully demonstrated India's first satellite-based giga-fibre service to provide high-speed, affordable Internet services in inaccessible areas across the country.

The company has named the latest technology, JioSpaceFiber, which it showcased on the first day of India Mobile Congress 2023 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Jio has joined hands with Luxembourg-based SES, a satellite telecom provider, to leverage cutting-edge Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite technology. JioSpaceFiber aims to connect millions globally, providing gigabit-speed, fibre-like services from space. According to Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., this initiative will enable universal access to digital services, including government, education, health, and entertainment.

"With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected," said Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd.

Four of the remotest locations in India have already been connected with JioSpaceFiber -- Gir, Gujarat; Korba, Chhattisgarh; Nabarangpur, Odisha; and ONGC-Jorhat, Assam.

Bharti Airtel, the rival of Jio in the telecommunication arena has also unveiled its plan to launch satellite-broadband services from the next month in the country.

Differences among the various internet services:

Cable Internet:
- Utilizes underground coaxial cables with inner copper wires and insulation for data transmission.
- Faster than dial-up connections using phone lines but not as fast as fibre optics.

Fibre Optics:
- Faster than coaxial cables.
- Employs advanced technology for rapid data transfer.

Satellite Internet
- Transmitted via signals from satellites orbiting Earth.
- Requires a dish receiver to capture signals, translating them into a usable internet connection.
- Accessible almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky.
- Particularly essential for rural areas lacking cable or fibre connections.

Cable internet outpaces satellite internet in terms of speed. While satellite internet is generally fast for daily tasks, it comes with a drawback—higher latency. The signal's longer travel distance results in a slight delay between command input and receiving the output, a factor where cable or fibre connections typically excel.
