RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: After months of protests and mass resentment over the rape and murder of a trainee female doctor at the state-run RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, a local court on Saturday (January 18) pronounced 33-year-old Sanjay Roy guilty in connection with the case. The verdict was pronounced by Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge of Sealdah court, 57 days following the commencement of the in-camera trial on November 12.

Sanjay Roy will be sentenced on Monday (January 20), providing a sense of accountability to thousands of people who took to the streets, seeking justice for the trainee doctor. The gruesome incident shook the entire country and people from all walks of life united to seek justice for the victim.

Here’s A Timeline Of The RG Kar Rape And Murder Case: 

August 9, 2024: A 31-year-old female trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was raped and murdered while on duty. Her semi-naked body was found on the third floor of the seminar hall.

August 10: The Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, in connection with the crime. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and protests by junior doctors.

August 12: The hospital's principal, Sandip Ghosh, stepped down amid nationwide protests, and the West Bengal government transferred the hospital's Superintendent.

August 13: The victim's parents and several public interest litigations (PILs) petitioned the Calcutta High Court, demanding a CBI investigation. The court transferred the probe to the CBI.

August 15: Widespread protests, including 'Reclaim the Night,' were organized, demanding justice and protection for women. Protests at RG Kar Medical College turned violent.

August 17: Healthcare services were disrupted nationwide as doctors went on a 24-hour strike in solidarity with the victim.

August 18: The Supreme Court took suo moto cognizance of the case and posted the hearing for August 20.

August 20: The Supreme Court criticized the West Bengal government, Kolkata Police, and hospital administration for delays in filing the FIR. A 10-member task force was constituted to address healthcare professionals' safety.

September 2: The CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh for alleged financial fraud.

September 14: Mamata Banerjee met with protesting doctors, and the CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal over delays in the FIR registration and missing evidence.

October 7: The CBI filed a chargesheet against Sanjay Roy.

November 12: The in-camera trial commenced.

December 13: Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal were granted bail due to delays in filing the chargesheet.

January 9: Hearings in Sanjay Roy's trial concluded.

January 18: The Sealdah court convicted Sanjay Roy and he will be sentenced on January 20.
