RG Kar Case Verdict: The Sealdah Court on Saturday found prime accused Sanjay Roy guilty of raping and murdering the 31-year-old junior doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Roy, the "sole prime accused" as identified by the CBI in its charge sheet, was found guilty under Sections 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that governs rape and Sections 66 and 103 (1) of the Act, which deals with punishments for death and murder. Section 103 (1) of BNS entails a maximum punishment of death or life imprisonment.

After Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das pronounced the verdict, Sanjay Roy pleaded not guilty and said that he has been falsely framed in the case. "I have not done anything. Why were those who were really responsible allowed to go freely? I am not guilty. The conspiracy was framed by many," Roy shouted in court, as quoted by IANS.

The judge then assured him that he will be given a chance to speak on Monday when the court will pronounce the quantum of sentence. "The accused will be heard on Monday. Now he is being sent to judicial custody. His punishment will be announced on Monday. I have fixed the time at 12:30 to hear the case," the Judge said, as quoted by ANI.

The court further said that the maximum possible sentence for Roy would be the death penalty, while the minimum possible sentence would be life imprisonment.

Following the verdict, the parents of the 31-year-old victim thanked the judge and said that the court "honoured the trust they had reposed in it". According to Bar and Bench, the court relied on forensic reports which pointed to the involvement of Roy in the incident, placing his DNA at the scene and on the person of the deceased doctor.

The primary accused, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, was arrested the day after the incident. CCTV footage showed him entering the seminar hall, and his headphones were found at the crime scene. The incident led to massive protests across the country, with the Kolkata High Court transferring the matter to the CBI. The matter even was taken up by the Supreme Court to frame guidelines for workplace safety of doctors and to monitor the investigation.
