Kolkata Rape-Murder:  Troubles seem to mounting further for Sandip Ghosh, the controversial former principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as the sleuths of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried an early morning raid at his Kolkata residence in connection with the corruption investigation initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Raids are also being conducted at the houses of three of his close associates.

Ghosh was earlier arrested by the CBI in connection with the financial irregularities at the government-run college, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was brutally raped and killed by a Kolkata police civic volunteer, who was later arrested. Ghosh was sent to eight days of police custody on Thursday.

According to a News18 report, doctors from the BR Singh Hospital, Eastern Railway, will conduct a medical examination of Ghosh and three others at the probe agency’s anti-corruption branch in West Bengal on Saturday.

A postgraduate trainee doctor, who was sleeping in an empty seminar hall of the hospital's emergency building, was raped and murdered in the dark of night on August 9, triggering nationwide protests against the brutal crime and the failure of authorities, including Ghosh as the principal of the RG Kar MCH.

He was removed from his post by the Mamata Banerjee-led state government after facing a lot of flak over the heinous crime. Later, the Calcutta High Court sanctioned an investigation against Ghosh after a former college staff, Dr Akhtar Ali, made severe allegations of financial fraud against him.

While the special crime branch of the central probe agency was probing the Kolkata rape and murder, the anti-corruption wing is investing in the financial irregularities charges.
