Hospitals in Delhi finally opened after 11 days of continuous strike in protest against the rape and murder of a junior female resident doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College (Kolkata Doctor Murder Case). A day after the Supreme Court's directive to the medical professionals to resume working, the resident doctors returned to duty in AIIMS, Safdarjung, RML, Loknayak, GB Pant hospitals on Friday.
With their return, OPD services and regular services became normal in all hospitals including AIIMS, leading to long queues of patients in the OPD of hospitals. Patients stood in lines for OPD registration in hospitals.
Patients queued up for OPD registration in hospitals. Resident doctors returned to duty in hospitals after 11 days.
Due to the strike, the number of patients in the OPD hospitals had reduced by 55 to 70 percent as the consultant-level doctors were mostly seeing old patients.
New patients were not being seen in large numbers. Due to this, the problems of the patients had increased. Stable patients were not being admitted to the hospital.
The protest caused a complete pause of the regular surgeries in hospitals. It had reduced by 90 per cent. Only serious patients were being admitted and surgery was being conducted only on serious patients.
As the doctors decided to end their strike, the operations were back to normal.
Notably, the United Doctors Front Association (UDFA) and Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) have called off the nationwide strike after a directive from the apex court.
"In response to the Supreme Court's proactive and reassuring directives, UDFA has resolved to suspend the ongoing nationwide strike. This decision is rooted in our unwavering commitment to patient care and our confidence in the judiciary's ability to address the pressing concerns of the medical fraternity," a UDFA release said on Thursday.
The Chairman of FAIMA Doctors Association, Dr Rohan Krishnan expressed gratitude to everyone who came out in support of the protest and asked all the doctors to resume their work, also noting that they will continue protesting in different forms, like on social media and by tying black bands on their arms.
