In a significant development in the RG Kar rape case 2024, the West Bengal government, led by the newly elected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, on Friday, suspended three IPS Officers citing ‘lapses’ in the investigation of the case.

Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat, Nabanna, the Chief Minister announced the suspension of three senior IPS officers: Vineet Goel (Ex-Kolkata Police Commissioner), Indira Mukherjee, and Abhishek Gupta.

The CM stated that the three officers were allegedly involved in the "mishandling" of the case, "offering money to the victim's parents as a bribe" and addressing an "unauthorised press conference" in connection to the rape case of a trainee doctor who was found dead at a seminar hall at a state-run hospital in August, 2024, PTI reported.

Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari said the government will initiate a departmental inquiry against former Kolkata CP Vineet Goel and 2 other officials in the RG tax case. “Bengal govt suspends 3 police officers for 'lapses' in investigation in RG Kar rape-murder case, Govt to start departmental probe against ex-Kolkata CP Vineet Goyal, 2 other officers", the CM said.

Meanwhile, the victim's mother, Ratna Debnath, contested and won the recent West Bengal elections from Panihati constituency. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier announced the formation of a commission to investigate the incident. The new Chief Minister has clearly stated that strict action will be taken in cases of women's safety.
