Senior doctors from private hospitals in West Bengal began a 48-hour cease-work protest and a 12-hour symbolic hunger strike on Monday, in solidarity with junior doctors, who have been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past nine days seeking justice for the victim of RG Kar rape and murder case.
Private hospital doctors halted non-emergency services, abstaining from OPDs and scheduled surgeries. However, critical treatments like chemotherapy and dialysis proceeded as planned for patients with prior appointments. Doctors also continued providing care to admitted patients and attended a limited number of emergency cases.

The medical fraternity said that while the strike would continue until Tuesday evening, they are prepared to extend the protest or adopt other forms of agitation if the standoff between junior doctors and the government remains unresolved.
Bengal Junior Doctors initiated a fast-unto-death protest against the state government. As many as four doctors were rushed to the hospital due to their deteriorating health condition. The hunger strike of the medicos has entered its eleventh day today.
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee criticised the junior doctors on Monday for their 'fast-unto-death' protest in West Bengal, claiming that the primary objective of the demonstrators was to gain media attention.
"What kind of hunger strike is this? It starts from the protest venue and ends once they get hospitalised. The hunger strike that we know is a fast-unto-death, not a fast-unto-hospitalisation. What these doctors are doing is a fast-unto-hospitalisation. Do they have just this much fire in their belly?" TMC's Kalyan Banerjee was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Doctors from across the country have been protesting the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which occurred on August 9. The Supreme Court took suo moto cognisance of the case and regular hearings are being held. The case is being probed by the CBI and a chargesheet has been filed against the accused.
