A day after a senior IRS officer was arrested in Rs 25 lakh bribery case, the CBI raid on premises linked to him in Delhi, Mumbai, and Punjab yielded a pile of cash worth Rs 1 crore, along with 3.5 kg gold and 2 kg silver on Monday.
Amit Kumar Singhal, a 2007 batch officer, was arrested on Sunday with one of his associates named Harsh Kotak. He was posted as the Additional Director General at Delhi's Directorate of Taxpayer Services.
"The Central Bureau of Investigation has conducted searches at various premises and recovered substantial assets and incriminating material, including approximately 3.5 kg of Gold and 2 kg of Silver, valued at around Rs 3.5 crore and cash amounting to Rs 1 crore approximately," NDTV quoted a CBI official.
According to the news agency PTI, CBI FIR alleges that Singhal demanded Rs 45 lakh bribe from Sanam Kapoor, owner of La Pino'z Pizza, to settle an income-tax notice.
The first installment of Rs 25 lakh was delivered to his Mohali residence on Saturday and was received by Kotak on his behalf.
According to officials, the case was registered by the CBI on May 31, 2025, based on allegations that the public servant demanded a bribe of Rs 45 lakh from a complainant in exchange for favourable treatment from the Income Tax (IT) Department. The demand was accompanied by threats of legal action, imposition of penalties, and harassment in case of non-compliance.
The CBI laid a trap and arrested the private person red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 25 lakh on behalf of the IRS officer at the latter's residence in Mohali. The officer was subsequently arrested at his residence in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
Both Singhal and Kotak were produced before a special magistrate in Chandigarh and were remanded in judicial custody till June 13.
