Chennai:39 RSS workers were detained by the Chennai police near Porur on Thursday. The workers were detained for organising a Guru Puja and a special Shakha training session at Ayyappanthangal Government Higher Secondary School without obtaining prior permission, news agency ANI reported.

The event was organised to commemorate the RSS centenary and the birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Deendayal Upadhyaya. However, authorities claimed that the program violated regulations, as it was held on the government school premises without obtaining prior permission.

This move attracted sharp criticism from Tamil Nadu BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan, who accused the Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, of turning a blind eye to daily anti-social activities while cracking down on nationalistic, traditional, spiritual, and patriotic cultural events.

“Around 50-60 Karyakartas were conducting Pooja in a Ground and suddenly police arrested them. On the other the hand Mafias are freely roaming on roads and murders are happening in Tamil Nadu but Police took action on RSS karyakartas,” Soundararajan said.

She described the arrests as “highly condemnable and undemocratic,” and urged the immediate release of those detained, as it is an auspicious day.

“DMK government encouraging anti- social and separatist elements in Tamil Nadu. They should control all these with iron hands. But when there is RSS March immediately police jump it and arrest,” she added.

The incident has sparked debate, with supporters condemning the arrests as unnecessary, while authorities defend the action as enforcement of regulations on gathering in public institutions.
