In another train mishap, at least 20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express (19168) derailed in Uttar Pradesh near Kanpur Junction in the early hours of Saturday, PTI reported. No person was harmed in the incident, which took place after the engine struck a boulder which was reportedly present on the tracks, a Railway Board official said.

The incident took place between the Kanpur and Bhimsen stations around 2:30 AM, while the train was en route to Jhansi, NDTV report stated.

“No injury to any person has been reported as of now. We are trying to find details regarding the number of coaches derailed,” the official said.

“The loco pilot said that some boulder hit the cattle guard (front portion) of the engine which had got badly damaged and bent,” he added.

Trains Cancelled, Diverted

As reported by the Railways, a derailment has led to the cancellation of seven trains and the diversion of three others. Shashi Kant Tripathi, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the North Central Railway Zone, which oversees the area where the incident occurred, mentioned that buses were provided to transport passengers from the accident site to Kanpur Railway Station.

“Besides, an eight coaches MEMU train departed from Kanpur to the accident site to carry passengers back to Kanpur so that further arrangements can be done to send them to their respective destinations,” Tripathi said.

Railways Minister Tweets

The Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw took to X to express that the incident was suspicious and central agencies are probing the derailment.

"The engine of Sabarmati Express (Varanasi to Amdavad) hit an object placed on the track and derailed near Kanpur at 02:35 am today. Sharp hit marks are observed. Evidence is protected. IB and UP police are also working on it. No injuries to passengers or staff. Train arranged for passengers for onward journey to Amdavad."
