Sandeshkhali Row: Following the release of an alleged sting operation video by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal on the Sandeshkhali row, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has responded by sharing a new video. In BJP’s recent clip, a woman, who was previously seen in the May 4 sting video, alleged that she was pressured into lying. She also said that the TMC video was “highly edited.”
“I had to lie to save my husband and child. This was an edited video. I spoke for one hour. Where is the entire video? Only two to three lines were shown in the sting video. I was threatened that if I didn’t say the lines my husband and child would be attacked. Selling dignity may happen in big cities not in villages like ours,” the woman said in the fresh video. The new video was uploaded on X by BJP’s IT cell head Amit Malviya on May 10.
TMC To Send Delegation To Meet President
This came as the TMC is planning to send a group of party leaders to meet with President Droupadi Murmu to inform her about the BJP's alleged manipulation of women villagers in Sandeshkhali to file false reports of sexual assaults.
“The BJP had formally taken a team, comprising some women from Sandeshkhali, to meet the President. She was misguided. Now the TMC too should formally send a team to meet the President. We need to clarify everything and tell the President that those were false cases of sexual assault and that she was misguided by the BJP. We must place the truth before her,” said TMC leader Shashi Panja as quoted by HT.
NCW On TMC's Target
The party has also filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI), claiming that the BJP paid women to file false rape complaints in Sandeshkhali. Apart from this, the TMC also planning to raise objections against Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), in front of the poll body, the party stated on Friday.
Sandeshkhali, situated in the North 24 Parganas district, gained attention in February this year when villagers, mostly women, demanded the arrest of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates for alleged sexual assault and land grabbing. Shahjahan was arrested on February 29 following a directive from the Calcutta High Court and subsequently transferred to the custody of the CBI.
