The Sarai Kale Khan junction is expected to be linked with the upcoming AIIMS-Mahipalpur elevated corridor to decongest New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area and Ring Road, and tackle the traffic volume from the expresways that would be constructed in future.

According to a Hindustan Times report, a government official said that a discussion was held over the high vehicular load due to Delhi-Dehradun and Delhi-Mumbai expressways. In response, the central government has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to check whether a tunnel or an elevated corridor can be made to connect the endpoint of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway with AIIMS-Mahipalpur.

In this regard, the NHAI plans to develop a 20 km elevated corridor connecting AIIMS and the Mahipalpur bypass.

“During the review meeting, the Union transport minister had expressed concern that this corridor alone will not fully resolve the traffic congestion in the NDMC area and central Delhi. Currently, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway terminate near the Sarai Kale Khan on Ring Road and the DND-Sohna (Jewar) link of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is also set to commence, which will increase further load on Sarai Kale Khan,” the government official said, as quoted by the report.

In another update, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued a two-day advisory for September 2 and 3, warning of traffic restrictions and diversions across several key roads in the area. The advisory will be in effect from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM on both days, aimed at managing congestion due to heavy vehicular movement in the region.

Traffic will be regulated on Road No. 224, Road No. 205, Road No. 221, Golf Link Road, and UER-II, which are expected to see significant slowdowns during the restricted hours. Commuters using these stretches are likely to experience delays and are advised to plan their routes accordingly.
