The Karnataka Cabinet on Friday approved the Sarjapur-Hebbal Metro line under Phase 3 of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Project. The 36.95-kilometre corridor, estimated to cost Rs 28,405 crore, will connect the northern and southern parts of Bengaluru through the central business district. The project will boost urban mobility and is expected to help ease the traffic woes in the metropolitan.
Sarajpur-Hebbal Metro Line Route Map
The Sarajpur-Hebbal Metro line, part of Bengaluru Metro Phase 3A, will feature 28 stations including 17 elevated and 11 underground stations. Key interchanges are planned at Iblur (Blue Line), Dairy Circle (Pink Line), KR Circle (Purple Line), and Hebbal (Blue and Orange Line). Additionally, it will intersect with eight other transport modes, bolstering urban mobility.

Financial Plan
An amount of Rs 5,000 crore has been earmarked for land acquisition. The financial model adheres to the Metro Rail Policy 2017, employing a joint venture equity-sharing framework. The project will seek sovereign loans or pass-through assistance from multilateral and bilateral institutions, with the Union government expected to contribute 20 per cent of the cost.
The project gained swift clearance from the Finance Department three weeks after receiving administrative approval from the Urban Development Department. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) was approved without changes, aligning with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited's standards. Notably, the absence of a double-decker proposal and coordination with BBMP’s tunnel road project facilitated the process.
Pending Approvals
Despite the State Cabinet's nod, the project requires multiple clearances, including from the Centre’s Institute of Urban Transportation and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Feedback from ten central departments, such as Niti Aayog and the Ministry of Railways, will be incorporated before the Union Cabinet grants final approval.
Pre-construction activities, including land acquisition and utility relocation, will begin after receiving the Union government's sanction. Civil works will follow promptly, paving the way for improved urban transport in Bengaluru.
