Satyapal Malik Death news: Satyapal Malik, 79, former Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Died after a prolonged illness at Delhi hospital on Tuesday. A post by Malik's X handle (@SatyapalMalik6) confirmed the demise of the former Bharatiya Janata Party leader.

Malik served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir between August 23, 2018 and October 30, 2019. He helmed J&K at a critical moment when the northern state underwent sensitive abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, subsequently, becoming a Union Territory on 5th August 2019. Coincidentally, today is the sixth anniversary of the repeal of the special status to J&K.

 

He had been the Governor of several states including Bihar, Odisha, Goa and Meghalaya before a long inning in the poltical circle.

PM Modi Condoles Malik's Death

Condoling Malik's demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, on X, "Saddened by the passing away of Shri Satyapal Malik Ji. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."

Malik Caught In Kiru Hydel Project And Farmer Law Issues

Malik was an active Governor. He broke the perception about a Governor, whose activities remain within Raj Niwas. Malik had supported farmers who staged a protest against the Centre over the three Farm Laws. In November 2021, Malik, then a Meghalaya Governor, declared that he was willing to step down from his post for backing the farmers’ agitation.

Malik was caught in controversy related to the alleged Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project (HEP) scam worth Rs 2,200 crore. In February 2024, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids at more than 30 places, including the premises linked to Malik, as part of its investigation into alleged corruption in the awarding of a contract for a hydel project in the Union territory. The case relates to alleged corruption in awarding contract for the civil work for the Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project (HEP) in 2019.
