Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami strongly criticised the government’s decision to extend the National Security Act (NSA) imposed on radical leader Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail. The NSA has now been extended for a third consecutive year, with the latest order set to take effect from April 23, 2025.

Harjinder Singh Dhami denounced the extension as a clear violation of human rights, claiming that Amritpal Singh has not committed any act that warrants being treated as a traitor or being imprisoned thousands of kilometres away from Punjab. He demanded the immediate removal of the NSA and called for a fair trial through due judicial process.

Amritpal Singh's father, Tarsem Singh, also expressed outrage over the decision, warning that the government would be held responsible if anything were to happen to his son. He accused authorities of "tearing apart democracy" and claimed that such actions reflect the misuse of power. “There is no place for black laws like this in a democratic country. They are being selectively applied to minorities,” he said.

Amritpal’s lawyer, Imaan Singh Khara, highlighted that this is the third time the NSA has been imposed on his client, first on April 23, 2023, then on April 23, 2024, and now again in 2025. He termed the move a deliberate violation of human rights.

Amritpal Singh, who is also an Independent Lok Sabha MP, had earlier filed a petition seeking permission to attend Parliament and participate in Republic Day celebrations. He argued that his continued detention has silenced the voices of his 19 lakh voters and alleged that the action is politically motivated to curb his growing influence.
