Noida: In a city known for its rapid pace, a unique community called Shabdil celebrated its first anniversary yesterday, proving that connection and creativity can flourish in the most unexpected ways. What began a year ago with just eight curious souls has blossomed into a thriving "samanvay" – a confluence – of over thirty poets, storytellers, and art lovers. The anniversary gathering, held at the elegant Balloch Fine Dining Restaurant in Sector 49, was a testament to their guiding principle: "Words that touch the heart, and hearts that create the words."
Shabdil defies easy categorisation. It's not a club or a formal collective but an organic, welcoming space where expression is paramount. Described by its members as a warm, meandering adda, it shuns the intimidating spotlight of traditional open mics. Instead, it fosters an environment where a ten-year-old’s poem about rainbows is as celebrated as a seventy-year-old’s memory of lost love.
The first-anniversary event on October 5th was a festival of emotions. The afternoon commenced with a moving six-minute video montage, a "Shabdil Diary" chronicling the laughter, tears, and unforgettable performances from their past eleven gatherings. The video, now available on their YouTube channel, captures the essence of a community where strangers arrive with notebooks and leave as friends.
Pri, a fellow Shabdilite, storyteller, and co-owner of Balloch, curated a series of interactive and playful activities that filled the room with infectious laughter. This set the stage for the main event: a free-flowing river of performances.
Over endless cups of chai, the "Shabdilites" shared their hearts. The audience was treated to a diverse tapestry of talent: a 12-year-old mesmerised with a Beatles cover on his guitar; two sisters created magic by seamlessly blending song and verse; and one poet delivered a powerful rap dedicated to the journey of Shabdil itself. Amidst these performances, another poet offered a heartfelt prayer for peace in a polarised world.
From its humble beginnings on October 6, 2024, Shabdil has grown into a vital cultural touchstone for many in Noida. It's a space that breathes art, laughter, and shared silences, reminding everyone that in a world full of headlines, sometimes the most profound healing comes from a simple poem, a heartfelt song, or a story shared between friends.
