Sharon Murder Case: A local court in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday sentenced 24-year-old Greeshma to death by hanging for the premeditated murder of her lover, Sharon Raj. Greeshma poisoned Sharon with a toxic chemical mixed into Ayurvedic medicine on October 14, 2022, leading to his death 11 days later.
The Neyyattinkara sessions court in Kerala delivered the verdict on Monday, deeming the crime heinous and undeserving of leniency. Sharon's parents, present in the courtroom, broke down as the sentence was announced, while Greeshma remained impassive.
The prosecution revealed that Greeshma, a Kanyakumari native, had been in a relationship with Sharon, from Parassala, since 2021. Despite their relationship, Greeshma’s family arranged her marriage to a military officer in March 2022, a match she accepted. To end her ties with Sharon, she allegedly conducted online research on poisoning and attempted to kill him multiple times by spiking his drinks with painkillers before finally succeeding.
Evidence presented in court included WhatsApp messages where Greeshma referenced an astrological prediction that her first husband would die, allowing her to have a peaceful second marriage. Sharon, reportedly skeptical of this belief, tried to dissuade her. The court also heard that Sharon had symbolically married Greeshma at Vettukadu Church.
The investigation faced hurdles, with Sharon's family accusing the Parasala Police of initially derailing the case. However, the court praised the police team for eventually conducting a meticulous probe.
Greeshma’s maternal uncle, Nirmal Kumar, who abetted the crime, received a three-year jail term, while her mother, Sindhu, was acquitted last week. The case took a dramatic turn when Greeshma attempted suicide by consuming disinfectant while in custody, resulting in a separate case against her.
