BJP IT department head Amit Malviya on Sunday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her remarks on the alleged gang-rape of a 23-year-old MBBS student in Durgapur, accusing her of misleading the public about the details of the case and lying about the girl being out at 12:30 a.m.

Malviya, in a post on X, “The truth is that, as per IQ City Medical College & Hospital, the girl went out at 8 p.m., which is a decent hour by any standard.”

He accused Mamata Banerjee of deflecting blame for the horrific crime onto the private college, instead of acknowledging the failure of the state’s law enforcement. “The area around the college has long been unsafe due to poor lighting and rising criminal activity. Police negligence allowed this tragedy to happen,” Malviya said. He also charged the Chief Minister with putting politics before justice. “It wouldn’t be surprising if she tries to strike a deal with community leaders to water down the case for electoral advantage. For Mamata Banerjee, a woman’s safety and dignity always come second to her political agenda,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, BJP's Shehzad Poonawala also took to X to criticise Mamata over her remarks. "Once again CM Mamata Banerjee indulges in victim shaming and blaming. Instead of standing with the Beti. She blames Beti and defends Balatkari," he wrote.

Another BJP leader, Pradeep Bhandari, also accused the Chief Minister of compromising the dignity of women in Bengal. His post on X reads, “Mamta Banerjee’s lie caught on Durgapur! Mamata said the girl shouldn’t have been out at 12:30 AM, but records confirm the horrific crime happened around 8 PM. Instead of ensuring women’s safety, Mamata has compromised the dignity of Bengal’s daughters. She must resign as Home Minister and Chief Minister."
