The Madras High Court on Monday extended the anticipatory bail granted to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra in connection with FIRs registered against him for mocking Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Kamra’s bail has now been extended until April 17. The comedian had initially been granted interim anticipatory bail on March 28.

Justice Sunder Mohan directed Kamra to take the necessary steps to approach the relevant courts in the meantime. The bench also acknowledged the petitioner’s statement that a petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking the quashing of the FIRs against Kamra, and that the matter is scheduled for hearing tomorrow, Live Law reported.

Advocate Suresh, representing Kamra in the case, informed the court that three additional FIRs had been filed against the comedian. He also stated that the police had visited Kamra's residence in Mumbai, causing distress to his elderly parents.

Suresh further informed the court that individuals who had attended Kamra's event were also summoned by the police.

Notably, Kamra had approached the Bombay High Court seeking to quash the FIRs filed against him by the Maharashtra Police. An urgent mention was made before a division bench led by Justice Sarang Kotwal, who agreed to hear the case on April 8.

The entire row erupted after Kunal Kamra, during a show, called Eknath Shinde a traitor for the latter’s 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA government in Maharashtra. Massive protests were held by Shiv Sena workers and they even vandalised Habitat Club, the venue where the show was filmed.
