Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Prime Minister Sushila Karki, saying that her appointment will pave the way for stability and prosperity in the country.

During an address in Manipur's capital, Imphal, PM Modi said, "I want to congratulate Karki on behalf of 140 crore Indians".

Karki occupying the top post of that country is an example of women's empowerment. I am confident that she will pave the way for peace, stability, and prosperity in Nepal,” PM Modi added.

PM Modi said that both the nations have been close friends that are bound by shared history, faith and cultural ties. New Delhi has stood strongly with the people of the neighbouring country during its transitional phase, the prime minister said.

Karki was chosen as the head of the interim government of Nepal after a meeting among President Paudel, Nepal's top military brass, and the youth protesters.

The protesters, agitated by nepotism and corruption at the government level, took to the streets after the KP Sharma Oli-led government banned 26 social media applications. It took only three days to bring the entire political structure to its knees.

The protests saw over 20 deaths and hundreds injured, but ended with the resignation of the top brass. The PM also lauded the resilience of the Nepali people, noting that citizens, especially young men and women, had been participating in cleaning and painting buildings over the past few days, amid political turbulence.

"I also want to congratulate the people of Nepal who, despite such turbulent times, have kept democratic values supreme," Modi said.
