Bengaluru News: An elderly man died on Monday after being run over by a private bus in an accident involving Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje's SUV in Bengaluru's KR Puram locality, news agency IANS reported. The incident took place as Karandlaje, who has been fielded by the BJP from the Bengaluru North constituency, campaigned in the area for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. The deceased was identified by Karandlaje as a BJP worker named Prakash.
According to the police, the accident was caused by one of the doors of the SUV, parked on the roadside, being opened abruptly. Prakash, who was riding a scooter, crashed into the door and fell off his vehicle before coming under a passing bus, the police informed. Subsequently, he was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries. The account of the accident provided by the police matched the one shared by Karandlaje herself.
As per a report by The Indian Express, the door of Karandlaje's car was opened by her driver. A case has reportedly been registered against the drivers of the private bus and Karandlaje's vehicle. Both of them have reportedly been taken into custody. The union minister's car has also been seized by the traffic police, ANI said in its report.
Speaking on the incident, Karandlaje said, "We are sad for what had happened. We stand with the family of the deceased. Prakash was a loyal BJP party worker. We will provide compensation to his family from the party."
