An international-level shooter Sambhaji Patil was killed following a horrific crash between his SUV and a truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway near  Maharashtra's Palghar.

On Monday night, Sambhaji Patil (27) was travelling in a Fortuner along with a fellow shooter Yash Prashant Chaudhary (22), according to an NDTV report. The duo was going to Gujarat from Pune.

Fortuner Crashes Into Parked Truck

The Toyota Fortuner, which was moving at a high speed reportedly went out of control while attempting to overtake. Chaudhary, who was driving, failed to spot a heavy truck parked on the roadside, hitting its rear. The crash was so severe that the car was completely damaged from the front.

"The car, which was speeding, rammed into a truck from the left side while trying to overtake it," an official told PTI. While Patil died on the spot, Chaudhary is being treated in the hospital for serious injuries.

Patil clinched the top spot in the 25-metre standard pistol event at the Junior World Cup in Azerbaijan in 2016. The next year, he competed in the World Championship in the same category, finishing 23rd.

According to the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF), Patil trained under Jaspal Rana. Beyond his competitive career, Patil also worked as a Sports Officer at Pune’s Balewadi Sports Complex.
