Uttar Pradesh News: Lashing out at the Uttar Pradesh government in the Muzaffarnagar child slapping case, the Supreme Court said on Monday that the incident should shake the conscience of the state. It added that there cannot be any quality education if a student seeks to be penalised only on the ground that he belongs to a particular community. The apex court statement comes after a video of a teacher allegedly encouraging Hindu students to slap a Muslim student went viral on social media.

A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal, while directing that the IPS officer shall file a report in the apex court, asked the state government to conduct counselling of the student and other students who were involved in the case.
It said that there is a prima facie case of failure on part of the Uttar Pradesh government in complying with the provisions of Right To Education Act, that deals with providing quality, free and compulsory education to children up to 14 years, without any discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or gender. The apex court bench also asked the state government to furnish a status report on implementation of the RTE Act in schools acorss the state in four weeks, while terming the incident as "serious".
In the video that has gone viral, it can be seen that one kid thrashed another kid, presumably Muslim, while the second was crying. Meanwhile, the teacher can be heard asking students to beat up the Muslim kid in question.
Another kid then came and thrashed the Muslim boy when the teacher asked him to beat him on his waist. The boy who was being beaten can be seen crying badly.
"The station in-charge of Mansoorpur has been directed to investigate and take necessary action," the Twitter handle of Muzaffarnagar Police had posted.
