SIR 2.0: After the Election Commission of India announced that it will revise the voter list of Tamil Nadu along with 11 other states and UTs, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has moved the Supreme Court against the proposed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.
The DMK party informed that the party MP, senior advocate NR Elango, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of the party’s organisation secretary, R S Bharathi.
The development came a day before the SIR process was to begin in the state. The announcement was made after CM Stalin convened an all-party meeting a day before and decided to move to the top court against the second phase of voter list revision in 12 States and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu.

“It is the duty of all parties to unite and raise their voices against the SIR being hastily implemented with the intent of snatching away the voting rights of the people of Tamil Nadu and murdering democracy," Stalin posted on X.
“Regarding the confusions and doubts in the voter list revisions – since our demand that they should be conducted after the 2026 general elections with adequate time and without any issues has not been accepted by the ECI, we have passed a resolution in today’s all-party meeting to approach the Supreme Court," he added.
Stalin also expressed gratitude towards parties that took part in the meeting to discuss SIR and urged those who did not take part to discuss the move in their respective parties.
The Election Commission of India informed the Madras High Court last month that 12 states and Union territories will go through their electoral list revision, including Tamil Nadu.
