Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the appeal of the Punjab government against a high court order granting bail to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in connection with the 2015 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case. Last year in September, Khaira was arrested from his residence in connection with a 2015 drug smuggling case.
On January 15, a local court granted bail to Khaira in a criminal intimidation case. Bholath MLA was granted bail by Kapurthala Judicial Magistrate and asked him to furnish a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh, Khaira’s counsel Kanwaljit Singh said as quoted by news agency PTI.

Khaira was arrested in the criminal intimidation case on January 4 after he was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in connection with a 2015 drugs case. The Kapurthala police had registered the case under sections 195A (threatening any person to give false evidence) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code against Khaira on the complaint of Ranjit Kaur.
In 2021, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Khaira on charges of money laundering linked to the 2015 case. However, he was granted bail in 2022. In February last year, the apex court quashed the summons against Khaira in the 2015 case.
