Twisha Sharma Death Case: The Supreme Court on Saturday took suo motu cognisance and decided to take up the Twisha Sharma death case. The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, will hear the matter on May 25, which created nationwide outrage over the alleged dowry death.
Twisha, 33, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal's Katara Hills area on May 12, following which an FIR was registered against her lawyer husband Samarth Singh and her mother-in-law and former district judge Giribala Singh for alleged harassment for dowry.
Twisha's Husband Sent In Police Custody
The development came hours after a Bhopal local court remanded Samarth in police custody for seven days, while his mother and co-accused Giribala Singh said the police were yet to contact her for recording her statement in the high-profile case.
Second Autopsy By AIIMS Doctor
Meanwhile, a four-member team of doctors from AIIMS Delhi reached Bhopal to conduct a second autopsy of Twisha Sharma following the Madhya Pradesh High Court's order, which was a key demand of the victim's parents.
Samarth Singh, who had been absconding for ten days after an FIR was registered against him and his mother following Twisha's death by hanging, was arrested on Friday evening after he reached the Jabalpur district court premises to surrender. He had withdrawn his pre-arrest bail petition filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court earlier.
He was taken to Bhopal in the wee hours of Saturday and produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class Anudita Gupta who sent him in police custody for seven days. His lawyer also handed over his passport to the court.
Twisha's Father Writes To Medical Board
Navnidhi Sharma, father of Twisha wrote to the medical board constituted by AIIMS Delhi to conduct a second post-mortem on her, raising several questions concerning the first autopsy. Twisha's family requested the board to independently examine and adopt a multidisciplinary approach involving forensic, pathological and radiological methods and address multiple concerns that, according to them, were not adequately dealt with during the first post-mortem conducted in Bhopal. They stressed that the representation was not aimed at influencing the board, but just to bring to its notice the concerns that led to the request for another post-mortem.
What Led The Supreme Court To Step In
The matter was sensitive in nature as it involved an influential family. The accused is a criminal lawyer, and his mother, a co-accused, is a retired judge. The victim's family alleged that the accused family used its influence to affect the case. Twisha's parents continued their protests for days, which drew mainstream media's attention, after which the Madhya Pradesh government recommended a CBI probe. They continued to press for the Supreme Court's intervention to achieve justice.
Her family accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Police registered an FIR under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act against her husband and mother-in-law Giribala Singh. The Singh family has claimed that Twisha suffered from drug addiction. Samarth Singh was arrested on Friday after being on the run for 10 days.
