A day after an on-duty policeman died, the Faridabad police on Sunday, February 8, arrested the swing operator and his staff under section 105 (culpable homicide). A complaint was filed by Assistant Sub-inspector Sunny, who was present at the fairground at the time of the accident.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the main accused has been identified as Mohammad Shakir, the proprietor of Himachal Fun Care, which operated the giant swing. Meanwhile, the district administration on Saturday confirmed that the fair will continue on Sunday with the ride area completely sealed.
A four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the incident. The team is being led by DCP (Crime) Mukesh Kumar and includes ACP (Crime) Varun Dahiya and sub-inspector Sanjay Kumar of the Surajkund police station, a senior police official said.
The SIT has been mandated to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the episode, identify any lapses or negligence, and assess whether prescribed safety norms were properly followed.
Deceased Policeman Honoured For Bravery
Inspector Jagdish Prasad, the policeman who lost his life while attempting to rescue people trapped in the swing, had been awarded the Police Medal by the Haryana Governor in 2019–20 for his exemplary service. Prasad, who served in the Haryana Armed Police, showed great bravery in trying to save those trapped in the swing.
However, in the due process, he received severe injuries leading to his death at a hospital. "The death of the inspector was caused due to the deliberate endangerment of people's lives by Himachal Fun Fair's proprietor Mohammad Shakir and his staff, who did not maintain the safety standards," the ASI wrote in his complaint.
Who Was Inspector Jagdish Prasad?
Born in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, Inspector Jagdish Prasad served in the Haryana Armed Police, a special armed unit of the state police which was in reserve. Prasad has been serving in the state police force since 1989 and was due to retire in March after completing 36 years in the police force. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. All three of them are students and are unmarried.
Prasad’s younger brother, Pradeep, is a teacher and lives in their native village with his father Surajmal and mother Shanti Devi. His older brother Satish Chandra works at a chemical factory in Ballabgarh, while his other brother Chandrabhan Singh works at a motor company in Faridabad.
