At least 10 people died and several areas have been flooded due to heavy rain in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu in the last two days, according to officials. Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts were the worst affected, with nine and one casualties respectively. Some of the victims died due to wall collapse or electrocution, while others were trapped in the floodwaters.

Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had given a 'wrong' forecast of heavy rain, as the affected districts received extremely heavy rain within two days. He said the southern districts, particularly Tirunelveli and Tuticorin, witnessed record rainfall and flooding, disrupting traffic and normal life.

Schools, Colleges Closed In These Tamil Nadu Districts

Schools and colleges in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts, while a general holiday has been declared in Thoothukudi district due to heavy rain and waterlogging at multiple locations in the southern district.

Trains Cancelled Due To Rain In Tamil Nadu 

Train services were also hit due to the rain, with the Southern Railway cancelling or partially cancelling several trains, including Nagercoil-Kanyakumari Express Special and Nagercoil-Tirunelveli Express.

MK Stalin Urges Centre To Declare Natural Calamity 

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and submitted a petition asking him to declare the Michaung storm and the torrential rain that hit the southern districts as a national disaster and to allocate a relief fund for the affected areas. 

MK Stalin stated that the southern districts had witnessed unprecedented devastation from the heavy rain in the past century. The chief minister appealed to PM Modi to grant financial aid to help the people recover their livelihoods and to restore the public infrastructure damaged by the floods in the state.


Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management said four districts have been majorly affected by rains in the last two days. The Minister said that around 1,21,820 acres of crops got damaged in the rain in Tenkasi district alone till Monday. He stated that except for Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts, most of the farmlands have been affected in the southern region of the state, reported news agency ANI.
