Tamil Nadu News: Tamil Nadu has announced a one-year ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of mayonnaise made from raw eggs, effective from April 8. This decision, outlined in a notification by R. Lalvena, the commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration, highlights the risks associated with raw egg products.

Mayonnaise, a popular condiment made with egg yolk, vegetable oil, vinegar and various seasonings, poses a significant health risk, particularly due to the potential for food poisoning caused by bacteria such as Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. The notification points out that many food businesses use raw eggs for making mayonnaise without proper preparation and storage, leading to microbial contamination and increased public health risks.

This ban mirrors previous restrictions placed on gutka and pan masala in the state. The notification stated that health measures may be implemented when officials have evidence suggesting potential harm to public health, pending further scientific assessments.

The decision follows similar actions taken by Kerala and Telangana after serious health incidents. Kerala enforced a ban in January 2023 after a nurse died from eating al faham, while Telangana imposed a one-year ban in October 2023 following a death and several illnesses linked to momos. The order, issued under Section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, cites risks from harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes found in raw eggs.

In a related development, Punjab has also taken action by imposing a one-year ban on the sale of caffeinated energy drinks to children. This ban includes restrictions on selling such drinks near schools, aimed at addressing growing health concerns regarding excessive caffeine consumption. Officials have noted serious health risks associated with energy drinks, particularly for minors and a scientific study is underway to evaluate their impact on young people.
