Chennai Weather: Chennai woke up to a mild morning today, April 23, 2025, with the city’s temperature is expected to hover between 29 and 33 degrees Celsius, with a humidity level of 76 per cent. Winds are predicted to blow steadily from the south at 21 km/h.
Tamil Nadu Weather: Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi And Other Districts To Witness rain
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari, are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall today. The weather agency has issued a travel advisory, warning of possible traffic congestion due to the rainfall, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and squall.

The ongoing rainfall has brought relief to many, especially in Thoothukudi, where the summer heat was eased by a brief spell of rain and cool winds. Singampunari and nearby areas in Sivaganga district also saw over an hour of rain, much to the delight of farmers. The rain has been beneficial for crops ahead of the Ponair Butum festival in Chithirai, making it a welcome event for the agricultural community.
Tamil Nadu Heatwave: Trichy, Salem, Vellore 40 Degrees
Meanwhile, the heatwave continues to affect parts of Tamil Nadu, with the Meteorological Department reporting temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius in eight locations across the state. The highest recorded temperature was 39 degrees Celsius in Erode, Karur Paramathi, Madurai Airport and Thanjavur. Trichy, Salem, and Vellore also saw temperatures near or above 40 degrees Celsius.

As the summer heat intensifies, the IMD forecasts that light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning may occur in isolated areas in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Temperatures in some parts of Tamil Nadu could rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal. In Chennai, the temperature may reach 36-37 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 28 degrees Celsius. The sky is expected to remain partly cloudy and no fishing warnings have been issued.
