Tamil Nadu Becomes Second State To Set Up Dedicated AI Ministry; Velachery MLA Kumar R Appointed Minister

Tamil Nadu: In a major push toward digital governance, the Tamil Nadu government has established a dedicated Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, making it the second state in the country, after Kerala, to establish a dedicated AI portfolio at the cabinet level.

The Tamil Nadu government has established the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, merging it with the Ministry of Information Technology and Digital Services to create a unified framework for drafting AI policies, strengthening e-governance, and deploying next-generation technologies.

Kumar R Takes Charge

Velachery MLA Kumar R has been appointed as the Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, and Digital Services.

According to a report by Jagran.com, citing experts, the decision by state governments to establish dedicated AI ministries signals a major shift. This move shows that advanced technology is no longer limited to the IT department alone, but is now being made an integral part of policy-making and public administration.

Vijay In Action Mode

In a bid to enhance public convenience, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has ordered that traffic must not be halted for his convoy for the first 12 days. The Chief Minister has also instructed all police stations to ensure that CCTV cameras remain operational round the clock, mandating that the filing of all public complaints be video-recorded to ensure accountability.

He further warned that strict action would be taken against any establishment or individual selling alcohol to those under the age of 21.

Tamil Nadu Portfolio Allocation

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government allocated portfolios to ministers in Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s Cabinet. The Chief Minister retained key departments, including the Home, Police, and Women and Child Welfare departments.

As per the portfolio allocation list, Vijay will oversee key departments, including Public Administration, General Administration, Home, District Revenue Officers, Police, Special Programme Implementation, Women Welfare, Youth Welfare, Welfare of Children, Welfare of the Aged and Differently Abled Persons, Municipal Administration and Urban and Water Supply.
