Chennai News: The long-awaited fourth railway terminal for Chennai is set to be relocated from Villivakkam to Perambur. The Southern Railway General Manager, R N Singh, has shared this exciting news with the press, revealing that ample land is available in Perambur to accommodate the project.
According to an Indian Express report, the decision to shift the terminal's location comes after extensive planning and evaluation. According to Singh, the final proposal for the fourth terminal is currently being prepared and will soon be submitted for further consideration.

This announcement comes as part of a larger announcement made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who, speaking via video from New Delhi, revealed a substantial budget boost for Tamil Nadu's railways. The state will receive a staggering Rs 6,362 crore for the financial year 2024-25, up from Rs 6,080 crore in the previous year.
Vaishnaw also mentioned the ongoing projects worth Rs 33,467 crore in Tamil Nadu, which include the development of 77 stations across the state. This substantial investment in the state's rail infrastructure is expected to improve the overall passenger experience and connectivity.
Adding to the positive news, the Railway Minister also announced plans to manufacture 2,500 new general class coaches, with a further 5,000 coaches in the pipeline to ease travel for unreserved passengers.
At the Chennai railway headquarters, Singh provided additional details on the upcoming projects. He outlined plans to lay two extra lines between Perambur and Ambattur, a crucial step that will pave the way for the development of the fourth terminal. Once this work is completed, the proposal for the fourth terminal will be sent to the railway board for final approval.

Addressing the ongoing delays in the Kilambakkam station project, Singh assured that the construction issues have been resolved and the station is expected to be ready by October this year, much to the relief of the local commuters.
Regarding the third terminal at Tambaram, Singh noted that it is being developed through a public-private partnership. He informed that a detailed project report will be submitted soon and construction will follow, although he acknowledged that it might take some time to complete.
