Chennai News: A woman’s body was found in a suitcase near Thoraipakkam in the southern suburbs of Tamil Nadu’s Chennai at around 9:30 am on Thursday, as reported by news agency ANI. The police said that her severed body parts were dumped in a suitcase and they have started an investigation into the matter. 

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was 32-year-old Deepa alias Vellaiammalm, from Manali, a neighbourhood of Chennai. The police have reportedly arrested a man identified as Manikandan from Sivaganga district, as reported by the Times of India.

The police reportedly tracked down the main suspect Manikandan with the help of CCTV footage. During the interrogation, the suspect confessed to killing Deepa with a hammer following a dispute over money. Following this, he dismembered her body, placed parts in a suitcase and then fled the spot.

Manikandan reached out to Deepa, a woman sex worker, through a broker and she went to Thoraipakkam on Wednesday, Times of India reported citing police. The woman’s sudden disappearance sparked concern among her family. 

The woman’s brother tried to reach her mobile phone and found it was switched off. Using the "find my device" feature, he tracked her phone to Thoraipakkam, prompting him to alert the local police. 

The police advised him to file a complaint about a missing woman at the Manali police station. Meanwhile, the police found her body in Thoraipakkam.  The police quickly contacted Deepa's brother, who identified the deceased as his sister.

In another incident that took place in Chennai, notorious criminal Kakathopu Balaji was killed in a police encounter in the Pulianthope area of the city on September 18. Balaji, who had more than 50 criminal cases against him, had been on the run for a long time. His body has now moved to Royapettah Government Hospital.
