Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the State Policy for Women-2024, which is a set of steps to promote women’s participation and social and political fields in the state. The policy foresees power sharing with women in various fields of the society and bringing out their full potential for their welfare.

The policy, which will be in force for 10 years, was prepared by the State Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department and is based on the Chief Minister's vision of social justice, equality and empowerment of women. The policy envisages creating a safe, healthy and ideal environment for women to live with self-respect and share power in society, economy and politics. It also seeks to bring out the hidden and hitherto undiscovered talents of women.

Key Features Of Tamil Nadu State Policy For Women-2024:

  • Establishing a gender-sensitive education system and reducing the dropout rate of girl children.

  • Improving the health and nutritional status of adolescent girls and women.

  • Increasing women’s participation in employment and ensuring safe and conducive workplaces.

  • Supporting women-run small businesses and new business ventures.

  • Bridging the digital gender gap and reducing the skills gap among women.

  • Facilitating greater access to corporate credit and bank loans for women in need.

  • Encouraging women to participate in the political arena.

    The policy objectives will be achieved through the implementation of initiatives and programmes with the participation of various departments. The Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment will monitor the implementation of the policy by setting up an ‘Implementation and Monitoring Unit’ at its Directorate.

    A high-level committee headed by the chief secretary and a district-level committee headed by the district collectors will review the implementation of the policy periodically and recommend interim amendments if needed. The policy is noteworthy as very few states in India have so far brought out a separate policy for women's development, an official release said.

    Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P Geetha Jeevan, Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena, Secretary of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department Jayashree Muralidharan, and Social Welfare Commissioner V Amudavalli were among those present on the occasion.
