A senior Tamil Nadu police officer has sparked controversy after a video of her laughing moments before briefing the media on the Coimbatore girl rape-murder case went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism on the internet.

Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R V Ramya Bharathi came under fire after the clip, recorded just before a press briefing on the sexual assault and murder of a young girl, began circulating widely online.

The row comes at a time when Tamil Nadu is witnessing widespread outrage over the abduction, sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Sulur near Coimbatore. The incident has led to protests and intensified political attacks against the ruling TVK government.
