Vijay Rally Stampede: A day after the fatal stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district, which claimed the lives of 40 people, actor-turned-politician and TVK chief Vijay’s residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, received a bomb threat, leading to heightened security around his residence. 

Following Vijay’s return to his home on Saturday night, after a fatal stampede in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district, local Chennai city police and CRPF personnel were deployed around his Chennai residence to strengthen security measures.

Vijay’s First Reaction After The Stampede

In his first response after the Karur rally stampede, TVK chief Vijay said that he was “shattered” and is in “unbearable pain” over the loss of lives in the rally. He expressed his condolences, expressing deep sympathy for the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

In a later statement, actor-turned politician Vijay expressed profound grief, saying that the incident had left him overwhelmed with sorrow. He also announced Rs 20 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh for each injured person.

“No words can ease this irreparable loss,” Vijay said, adding that he stands firmly with the bereaved families in grief. The stampede at a political rally presided over by TVK chief and actor-turned-politician claimed the lives of 40 people and left over 100 injured.

Tamil Nadu Director General of Police G Venkataraman stated that while 10,000 attendees were expected, 27,000 people showed up at the 1.2 lakh sq ft venue, leading to overcrowding and less ventilation.

“People had been waiting since 11 a.m. without food or water in the heat, and Vijay eventually arrived only at 7:40 p.m.,” he said. According to the state government, the crowd started gathering since noon under the scorching heat to meet their hero, Vijay, who arrived at the venue at around 7 PM. Several witnesses criticised the lack of safety arrangements. Chief Minister MK Stalin has appointed a committee headed by a retired Madras High Court judge to probe the stampede.
