The Tamil Nadu Police on Saturday filed a complaint against unidentified persons for trespassing at the Chennai MLA hostel. It later turned out to be a team of the Enforcement Directorate, which was conducting searches in connection, the official said.
The ED conducted searches linked to Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader I Periyasamy and his MLA son I P Sentilkumar, they said.
The complaint was filed by an official of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat. In his complaint, he alleged that unknown persons, allegedly from the ED, entered the room of legislator Senthilkumar in the MLAs' hostel without obtaining due permission.
MLA Senthilkumar's room is in the MLAs' hostel in Chennai in the Omandurar Government Estate area near the Tamil Nadu Assembly on the premises of Fort St George.
The officials added that the probe agency searched multiple premises linked to Minister Periyasamy and Senthil as part of a money laundering investigation.
Periyasamy's residence was among several locations which was searched by the ED. Reacting to the searches, DMK leader Kanimozhi said that no amount of intimidation can intimidate DMK leaders. She said, "No amount of intimidation can intimidate DMK leaders...The BJP government is trying to win the elections by launching many attacks on democracy, like SIR with the help of the Election Commission..."
DMK president and Chief Minister M K Stalin lashed out at the BJP over the ED raids on his cabinet colleague I Periyasamy, claiming such agency action is targeted against opposition parties.
In his address at the 26th State Conference of the CPI, he said that his party has successfully managed to cross many difficulties and challenges in the past.
"We said they would intimidate opposition parties that don't tow their line by using the ED against them. They are repeatedly carrying out raids. Even today, they have conducted raids at minister Periyasamy's house," Stalin said.
