Tamil Nadu Stampede: The Madras High Court on Saturday heavily slammed the actor-turned-politician Vijay and the other top leaders of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party over the stampede in Karur that killed 41. The court criticised Vijay's party members for fleeing from the scene immediately after the stampede broke out, adding that the party did not care for the supporters. Justice N Senthilkumar observed that TVK leaders should have taken necessary steps to tackle the situation. However, the court also expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation by the state government.

It ordered formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Asra Garg, and has directed the state government to cooperate. Justice N Senthilkumar observed that the TVK leaders should not have left the scene just after the stampede, adding that they put no efforts to control the situation.

"...it is really sad that Mr.Vijay, the leader and the members of his political party which organised the meeting fled the scene of occurrence...This Court strongly condemns the conduct of Mr.Vijay, the organisers of the event and the members of the political party for fleeing from the scene of occurrence immediately after mishaps," Justice Senthilkumar was quoted as saying by the Bar and Bench.

"Shockingly, the programme organisers, including the leader of the political party, absconded from the venue, abandoning their own cadres, followers, and fans. There is neither remorse, nor responsibility, nor even an expression of regret," he added.
