Tamil Nadu Tragedy: Nine migrant workers died and several got injured after an under-construction building collapsed at the Ennore thermal power station near Chennai on Tuesday, prompting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to launch a relief operation. The chief minister instructed Power Minister SS Sivasankar and TANGEDCO Chairman K Radhakrishnan to immediately oversee relief work at the accident site. Stalin also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each victim of the Ennore Power Plant collapse on Tuesday.

Hours after the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased. Expressing his condolences, he, in an X post, said, "Saddened by the mishap due to the collapse of a building in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families in this difficult hour.

Dr J Radhakrishnan, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Chairman of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) said, "Two coal sheds which are being constructed and Ennore Thermal Power construction by BHEL, they had given some contract to one Metalkarma. That suddenly collapsed. About 4 workers, hailing from Karbi Anglong district (Assam) and 5 from Hojai district (Assam) have passed away. One is injured but he is out of danger. CM has directed and Transport Minister has visited them. Postmortem of the people is being done by 3 teams. Then the bodies will be embalmed and sent by flights. CM has announced Rs 10 Lakhs...Minister is going to visit the site also."

Worker Recounts Horror After The Incident

A worker at the Ennore Thermal Power Station construction site recounted the moment when a steel arch collapsed on labourers. He said, "I am new here. I don't know the name of that part (of the arch) very well. But it was the middle connection. Suddenly, there was a noise, and that middle part fell out, and then everything else just collapsed."

Here Are The Other Highlights Of The Chennai Srategy:

- Tamil Nadu Ministers SM Nazar and CV Ganesan visited the Stanley Government hospital to enquire about the condition of those injured in a steel arch collapse at the Ennore Thermal Power construction site.

- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the State government is coordinating with the authorities in Tamil Nadu to bring back the mortal remains of the nine migrant workers who reportedly succumbed to death after falling down at a construction site at Minjur, Thiruvallur district.

- "4 of the victims are from Karbi Anglong District and 5 from Hojai District. We are coordinating with authorities in Tamil Nadu to bring back their mortal remains at the earliest," Sarma added in her post.

- Victims were identified as Munna Kemprai, Sorbojit Thausen, Phaibit Fanglu, Bidayum Porbosa, Paban Sorong, Prayanto Sorong, Suman Kharikap, Dimaraj Thousen, and Dipak Raijung.

- The accident occurred during the construction work of the power plant being carried out by BHEL company in Ennore.

- Tamil Nadu Congress president K Selvaperunthagai also expressed grief over the demise of the nine people. Citing media reports, he said those injured are being treated at the Government Stanley Medical College in the city. He called for rigorous safety measures to prevent such incidents in future. "On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Congress, I extend my deep condolences to the bereaved family members. I wish those injured a speedy recovery," he added.
