This incident comes just days after the murder of K Armstrong, the Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) Tamil Nadu chief, in Chennai. The Chennai police have arrested eight people in connection with Armstrong's murder and have seized weapons, a Zomato t-shirt and bag, and three bikes used in the crime.

The police suspect that the motive behind Armstrong's murder was related to the assassination of gangster Arcot Suresh in August 2023. The associates of Arcot Suresh believed that Armstrong was involved in or had conspired to have Suresh killed. The Chennai police formed special teams to investigate the case thoroughly.

Meanwhile, one of the accused in the case, Thiruvengadam, was killed in a shoot-out near Madhavaram in Chennai on Saturday night. The exchange of fire took place after he tried to flee from police custody while he was taken out to recover a weapon used in the murder of Armstrong, the police said.

According to the police, Thiruvengadam is said to have followed Armstrong for several days, ahead of the murder, keeping a constant tab on the BSP leader's activities. Thiruvengadam was taken to a place near Madhavaram to take the weapons that were used to kill Armstrong, police said.
