A functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been detained in Tamil Nadu's Karur district after a 25-year-old married woman accused him of sexually harassing her for nearly three months and attempting to abduct her.
As per the complaint, Ramesh, the TVK Krishnarayapuram East Union Secretary, allegedly sexually harassed the woman when she was employed at a medical store in Kulithalai. The woman complained that he was often waiting outside her office and made vulgar comments and gestures towards her and even trailed her home while she returned from work.
Terrified about her safety, the woman alerted her family; since then, her husband has been escorting her to and from her workplace for the last two months.
Alleged Kidnap Attempt
The situation allegedly escalated on the day of the incident when the woman's husband was unable to pick her up. As she was walking home, accompanied by her younger sister, Ramesh allegedly intercepted her on the road and attempted to kidnap her, police said.
The woman promptly informed her relatives, who, together with neighbours, gathered at the place. He was reportedly beaten by the mob before police reached and arrested him.
Family Alleges Police Inaction
After the incident, she submitted a complaint to the Kulithalai Police Station. The woman's family alleges that the local police have taken time to act in order to protect the TVK functionary. The police declined to comment on the allegations, stating that an inquiry was in progress and appropriate legal action will be initiated based on the inquiry report.
